Year's End party
The HOPE association celebrated their Year's End party at the Mediterranean Villa and thanked all volunteers and employees for the hard work and all archivments.
Trip to Germany / Dr. Susanne Reuther visited Germany in December to promote HOPE at a District Conference of the Round Table organisation. HOPE is a candidate for the annual campaign of this organisation in 2004/2005. The flight was sponsored privately.
International Press Conference with Nelson Mandela & Arabella South Africa Holding
HOPE will be represented at the international press conference with Nelson Mandela on Robben Island on the 28th of November through Rev. Fr. Stefan Hippler. In the evening the ArabellaSheraton Grand Hotel will celebrate their "reflections of a journey". HOPE congratulates Arabella South Africa Holding for all their archievments in the last year.
Bavarian Broadcast
The Bavarian Broadcast is currently doing a documentary on the work of Fr. Stefan in Cape Town with a special focus on the HOPE project. The 45 minute documentary will be shown in the "ARD" in spring 2004.
Visit of Minister Fischer
Deputy Chancellor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. Joschka Fischer, visited South Africa. Amongst various meetings he also met with the Chairperson of HOPE, Rev.Fr.Stefan Hippler and AIDS activist Zacki Achmat to discuss the situation of HIV/AIDS in South Africa. Part of his delegations visited the HOPE project at Tygerberg Academic Hospital.
Treatment
As the Provincial Government prepares for the roll-out programme on treatment HOPE agreed to take a further five kids and one mother on the treatment scheme to allow treatment in time.
Workshops
Rev. Fr. Stefan Hippler is due to contact a workshop for Catholic priests as well as a preventative workshop for streetkids. Further he will conduct a two-part workshop for young adults in Crossroads and Nyanga. On the 30th of November he will preach at Delft Catholic Church about HIV/AIDS.
Welcome
We welcome Ayanda Mama, our HOPE community health worker for Wallacedene who commenced work on the 15th of October 2003.
Check out with HOPE
During the opening ceremony of the new Arabella Sheraton Grant Hotel next to the Convention Centre in Cape Town, Dr. Duisberg, CEO of Arabella South Africa Holding announced that Arabella will give their guests the option "to top" the bill and to support HOPE. Thank you, Arabella!
Black Empowerment Company supports HOPE
With PrionTex, the first so called "Black Empowerment Company" connects with HOPE to combat HIV. One of there highly successful medical textiles has attached a label of HOPE and percentages of the sale will go towards the project. Many thanks!
Talks and Workshops
Rev. Fr. Stefan Hippler, chairperson of HOPE, conducted a workshop at the Grande Roche Hotel in Paarl and gave a talk at Red Cross Children's Hospital about "De-stigamatisation". Further he was invited to talk at UCT about the project and faith. HOPE conducts workshops and talks when invited by any organisation.
National Government
With satisfaction HOPE received the news that the national government now also wants to join the battle against HIV/AIDS and provide ARV therapy for everybody in the near future. HOPE will work closely together with the Provincial Government to let this plan become reality in the most efficient way.
Preparations for workshop with sangomas and traditional healers
HOPE is committed to network with all people concerned about HIV/AIDS. For this reason HOPE has initiated a workshop to be held on the 5th of December 2003 bringing more than hundred traditional healers and western medicals together to discuss further cooperation. The first preparation meeting took place. HOPE is honoured that the Minister of Health (Western Cape), Mr. Piet Meyer will take part in this workshop.
Congratulations
Kids Cru, the research unit led by Dr. Mark Cotton was opened in mid September. HOPE congratulates and wishes to expand the already existing cooperation between the research unit and HOPE.
Wallacedene advertised
The post of a HOPE community health worker in Wallacedene is advertised. This post is financed by Process Consulting in Munich/Germany. The successful candidate will take office on the 15.10.2003.
New kids on therapy, new part time employees
Preparation are running to add another 50 kids on the sponsorship scheme financed via KIDSPOSITIVE. To coop with the workload additional time was added to the working schedule of our part time doctor and an additional part time pharmacist was employed.
Paarl added
Since the 1.7.2003 Paarl has become the next place where a HOPE community health worker is placed.
Honorary Member
The Minister of Health, Mr. Piet Meyer and Mr. Hans Reuther from Germany were announced "Honorary Members" of HOPE during the annual Ball of HOPE 2003. Congratulations!
Cooperation
The first talks took place between the HOPE Association and KIDSPOSITVE to evaluate the common grounds and to pledge common action in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Ball of HOPE
The 6th annual ball of the German speaking Catholic Community in association with the Southern African - German Chamber of Commerce and Industry took place at the ballroom of Mount Nelson Hotel on the 10th of May. 250 guests enjoyed themselves and Arabella South Africa Holding donated R 85 000 towards the project.
AMG
The first AGM took place on the Tuesday, 13th of May 2003. Members of the Association as well as guests from the Ithemba Ward, Tygerberg Hospital, Elsiesrevier Day Hospital and Mfuleni Day Hospital heard the Chairperson's report and discussed the future of the HOPE project. The audit financial report for the year 2002/2003 was also presented during the AGM.
UNISA studies
The HOPE community health workers as well as staff and volunteers started their UNISA studies to obtain a certificate for "Care and Counselling in HIV/AIDS".
PBO Status
As from the 24.2.2003 HOPE is acknowledged as a Public Benefit Organisation in South Africa.

We filed an application to protect our logo in South Africa.
HOPE COMMUNTIY HEALTH WORKERS
The third HOPE community health worker post is advertised for the day hospital in Paarl. The successful candidate will commence work on the 1st of July 2003.
Triple Therapy
We are searching for sponsors to support antiretroviral treatment for children (and mothers) who need the treatment to survive and continue with their lives. For R 7 000 (or Euro 700) a year we can keep one child alive. A donation from the Rotary Club of Westerstede enables us to bring a family on triple therapy for the first time - we are very excited about this. |
